A timely true life novel, The Gates of Light, invites us to reflect on our own diverse nationalities while simultaneously understand what it means to be American. Through lighthearted yet accurately profound writing, the author faces unapologetically her love affairs and back-door Congressional dealings to show that courage is rarely simple and can come at the most unexpected time. She confirms that our ancestry can be our greatest asset and self-acceptance of identity our greatest redemptive achievement. While working in Washington DC in 1984 as the Press Secretary for Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr. of New York, the author gets a phone call from her father. Her 17 year old cousin has been drafted during the Iran/Iraq war. He must flee from Iran or face an almost certain death. Joining a cast of international characters that include Pakistani black market passport dealers, members of Francois Mitterand's inner political sanctum, influential committee members on Capitol Hill and INS agents in California, the author uses her ties in Washington to help extricate her young cousin whom she has not seen in 14 years. This harrowing tale will keep the reader on the edge of their seat from first page to last. With insight and perception, the reader will learn that being American is about so much more than nationality or origin.

This book is an absolute treat. Pari Forood grabs your interest right away and keeps it to the last page. The Gates of Light is a thriller based on true events. In part it is an escape story from forced conscription into the Ayatollah's army, but more importantly, it is a story of arrival: the harrowing journey to the U.S. of a young refugee from Iran. And implicitly it is about the arrival of the author herself, whose father came to America from Iran and whose WASP mother descended from the Mayflower generation. Through Pari Forood’s extraordinary efforts to save her cousin, she becomes an American who can fully own all sides of her heritage. The book takes the reader from Tehran, to Pakistan, to the back corridors of Congress in Washington, DC, to our embassy in Paris, and finally, to the plot’s denouement at Los Angeles International Airport. I could not put the book down.Product details

The Gates of Light edition by Pari Forood Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
I just finished The Gates of Light - I couldn't put it down! I found it a fascinating, well written and easy to read book. Although the events depicted in the book largely take place in the mid 1980s the topics are so very timely and important for us to read and understand. Ms. Forood's insights into the history of the middle east conflict, immigration and assimilation are astute and come from personal and family history. I highly recommend this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed The Gates of Light. This true life novel grabs you from the beginning with its exotic portrayal one young woman's quest to help her cousin escape from Iran in the 1980s. I learned a great deal of history from this novel and being married to an immigrant I have even more respect and admiration for those who come to the United States for a better life.
"Bravo" Pari Farood!
