The Women of Magnolia edition by Marlene Mitchell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is one of my favorite books of 2011. I love a book that begins with a family and moves throughout generations of the women. This book takes place back in the 1800's, the days of slavery, and the civil war destruction of the plantations. I loved the characters. I especially liked Hallie, and was very eager to see how the different "books" within the book would come together. I highly recommend this book, and I have already downloaded another book of Marlene Mitchell's. She is a very good author. I look forward to reading more of her books, and I hope she will continue to write books that take place in this era of time.
Yes, there were a few errors, kindle and others, but basically this was a very good book. Without the errors, I definitely would have given this book five stars.

Another thing that kept my review to four stars was the way Ms Mitchell introduced the new characters (Lola and Eden) into the book. Maybe she could have worked their stories in sooner, instead of jumping back and forth in time. That was confusing. Another thought is that she could have headed their chapters individually, so that you knew a real change was about to happen.

All in all, this was a very fine book. I can't remember reading any other Civil War era book, since GWTW, that kept me more captivated than TWOM.

Tweak these few problems, and you will have a real winner, Ms Mitchell.
This book had me from from the start. It was perfect the way all the characters individual stories were told and then interwoven together. As far as 1or 2 of the reviews that I read on comments about the spelling errors, pay no attention. I'm not saying that the book is free from these errors, I found quite a few misspellings, but NOT enough to make things confusing about the story and DEFINITELY NOT enough to make it a bad read. I am the type of reader that I have a handful of favourite writer's,but I since I am such an avid reader I have learned to broaden my horizons and that is how I find these VERY UNIQUE Stories. You can bet dollars to donuts I will be keeping an eye for more from MISS Mitchell. I would recommend this to ANY Book Reader.
The Women of Magnolia revolves around a group of women before, during and after the Civil War. Magnolia is the name of the estate they lived in on the Mississippi coast. At it's heart, it is a romance. And I found it interesting and important that one of the romances was a biracial relationship. I have wondered through all that I have read about the Civil War and it's aftermath just how many of these relationships existed, thrived and/or survived the volatile racial climate that was the South during and after the Civil war.
The women in the story were realistically portrayed with all their virtues, prejudices and foibles in full display.I easily identified with the characters and their individual stories.
I really enjoyed this story. I felt like it dragged a little in places and skimmed over others especially toward the end of the book.
I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes a saga. It spans through the civil war, before and after and goes into a great story of not only the plantation owners but the slaves that work those plantations. Obviously by the title, the story focuses on the lives and hardships these women endure . Oh my gosh, there are so many memorable characters and you actually feel like you are there with them. You travel from north to south and all the way to Jamaica and back. You see that side of humanity that treat the
humans as possessions and steal them away from their homes in Africa and bring them in terrible conditions to America.
The strong love between some of these ladies and their husbands and children is wonderful. You will love this story.
I bought the kindle edition of this book. Very good choice and read for $2.99. It was a good fast moving story line with good character development set during the Civil War period. I liked all the main characters - there is a good storyline for each group of main characters as the story moved down several generations of family that inhabited their beautiful second home on the beach named Magnolia

My only complaint was about half way thru the book the story line and main characters abruptly changed. I went back and reread the previous chapter several times and could not understand what was going on. I thought that somehow a second seperate book had been scanned instead of the continuation of "The Women of Magnolia". I went to the reviews to see if I could get a clue and there were a couple of mentions about new characters coming into the story and one group of them were courtesans. So I continued reading and discovered that there were two groups of people brought into the story line that had no connection to the first group. They eventually all came together towards the end of the book. I don't believe I have ever read a book written that way.

In any event it was a very good book set in the Civil War time period with likeable characters and a great read for the money.
